Despite a major pandemic of Swine Flu and the Global Economic Crisis, the 2nd International Conference in partnership with the Centre for Restorative Justice, Simon Fraser University went ahead and was an outstanding success for those involved.  Check out the program below.

Affect Theory - Two 1/2 day Workshops

Vick will offer two 1/2 day workshops on Affect Theory for practitioners wanting to better understand the emotional dynamics involved in restorative processes.  Follow the link to find out more about Vick and the work of the Silvan Tomkins Institute.  This is a workshop not to be missed if you want to improve your practice and learn more about Affect Theory.

Peacemaking Circles - Two workshop options

Half-day workshop on Peacemaking Circles

9.00-12.30am and 1.30-5.00pm Thursday 4 June 09

This workshop will provide an introduction to Peacemaking Circles, a structured dialog process that emerged in the restorative justice movement as Sentencing Circles and then evolved to broad applications in many aspects of life.  Participants will experience the circle process, discuss the values foundation of the process, and learn about the key structural elements of conducting a Peacemaking Circle.  The workshop will also explore multiple applications of the circle process in education, criminal justice and the workplace.

1 1/2 day workshop on Peacemaking Circles
   
Choose AM or PM session Thursday 4 June and continue Friday 5 June 9.00-4.30pm

This workshop will include the half day workshop described above and then engage in a more detailed explanation of the structural elements of a Peacemaking Circle, the steps of using Peacemaking Circles and the design of a Peacemaking Circle using the structural elements.  This workshop will also explore the role of the facilitator in a Peacemaking Circle and how that differs from other familiar processes.

Cost $150 CAD - Full workshop (1 1/2 days). 



Youth Development and Gang Intervention - 2 Day Workshop

9am - 5.00pm - Thursday 4th and Friday 5th June 2009

This workshop will discuss intervention, as opposed to prevention or suppression activities, as a series of strategies that work together to address gang violence among young people. 

The two days will be a combination of: (a) presentation of best and effective practices; (b) circle process for dialogue; and (c) support and coaching for the development of individual and/or team workplans for working with young people to change their lives, so that they can live without violence and move towards self-sufficiency. 

Cost: $250.00 CAD (Lunch provided both days)

Restorative Justice, Prison & Community - 1 Day Workshop

9am - 3.30pm Thursday 4 June 2009,                  
Cost $60.00 CAD (includes transport & lunch)

Visit Ferndale Prison, a minimum-security prison in the Fraser Valley for a one day workshop with the inmates of the FAVOUR (Friends and Volunteers Offering Understanding and Respect) group and AVP (Alternatives to Violence Project).

This workshop will include circle dialogues and experiential exercises with prisoner members of the FAVOUR and AVP groups.  Cost for this workshop is $60.00 per participant and covers return bus transportation from the Coast Plaza Hotel to Ferndale Institution in Mission and the day’s activities.  Lunch will be provided through the institution’s Culinary Arts program, compliments of the Correctional Services of Canada.

Workshop participants must complete and submit a security clearance form, provided by the event coordinators.

Practicing the Principles of Restoration 

9am - 4.00pm Thursday 4 June 2009

This practical and interactive workshop will provide insight and skill building opportunities for practitioners using restorative processes in a wide range of settings.  Designed to expand the skill base of experienced practitioner's (although others welcome).

By recognising a common philosphy and underlying principles, participants will:

  • develop and enhance existing skills
  • look beyond current area of practice for knowledge that can be adapted and applied to the work they do; and
  • collaborate in practice development.

Aboriginal Cultural Night inside a Federal Women's Prison - Evening Workshop

5.30-9.00pm Thursday 4 June 2009 (evening event)       

Cost $20.00 CAD (includes transport & meal)

An opportunity has opened up for a small group of conference delegates to participate in a visit to Fraser Valley Institution
(a federal a multilevel facility for women serving more than two years) and to attend and participate in the women’s regular Aboriginal cultural evening at the Prison.

This experience will particularly appeal to conference delegates who are interested in learning more about Aboriginal women and related peacemaking processes. The cultural evening will be hosted by Aboriginal Elder Mary Fayant and women of the First Nations Sisterhood who are serving time at Fraser Valley Institution. It will provide an intimate chance to experience some traditional ceremonies and teachings as well as drumming and conversation in circle.

Workshop participants must complete and submit a security clearance form, provided by the event coordinator prior to the 16 May.

Refund Policy


A refund less a 10% administration fee will be provided on request, up to 14 days prior to the start of the conference.  After this date, all funds will have been committed and no refund will be provided unless extenuating circumstances exist.

Your registration may be substituted for another person.  Please advise us of the name change prior to the start of the conference.
